Fine wine trilogy

The Quatro Terras Story

After many years of living in California and vineyard consulting in Napa Valley, Louis and Jeannot Horta decided to return to Louis’ ancestral country to develop a small vineyard project with a vision to bring the New and Old Worlds together in a bottle of wine.

Following and intense climatic research in Silver Coast Portugal, we identified an area north east of Alcobaca with optimal conditions for the classic Bordeaux grape varieties to fully express their phenotype. And with some gymnastics, we enticed four individual land owners to divest their properties and unite them into one contiguous estate.

The four adjoining plots of land are divided in the middle by a small east/west creek, with two neighboring plots to the north, and two to the south, separated by a chestnut grove, each of which, with a unique solar exposure, soil texture and fertility.

Terra A, north of the creek, boasts a 20% south sloping exposure with gravelly volcanic tufa and blue clay layers from the Triassic Period, conducive to high quality Cabernet Franc. This unique solar exposure and mineralogy manifests itself in the native cultures of anise and oregano proliferating among the vines.

Terra B, is a near flat strip along the creek with rich soil nutrients, transported by water runoff from terra A. It is planted with Merlot grafted in an extremely low vigor rootstock to balance the vine’s vigor. The vineyard floor is generally covered with a blanket of native mint and fennel from November through June of the following year when it turns brown to finish the annual life cycle.

Terra C, south of the creek, has a gentle north west exposure with a loamy low fertility soil. This parcel was selected for our white blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc.

Terra D, also south of the creek and along the chestnut grove, has a gentle west slope with low fertility quartzite loess, interwoven with potassium rich blue clay, we deemed ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon.

In summary, the combined diversity of the four lands we acquired, imbues the blessing of nature, we affectionally call Quatro Terras.

May the Vine be with you!
